Ultimately our goal was to bring Outkast’s vision for “Spottieottiedopalicious” to life by creating a music video that’s equal parts beautiful and unique, just like ATL. Aquemini has been so influential the past 25 years in Atlanta and beyond, which is why we wanted to make a piece that simultaneously represents and celebrates the culture it helped create.

The Journey

The video follows someone through a club-filled evening in Atlanta and the thoughts that go through their head as the night spirals. It shows how a single moment can change your night and your future.

Our character starts their journey traveling on an undulating road through space before pulling up to the club for the first time. Inside, the DJ is spinning and people are dancing their worries away. Across the room, we see a SpottieOttieDopaliscious angel, and suddenly the club melts away as we’re transported to another realm where two star signs become forever entangled. Aquemini is born. But the harsh realities of life begin to sink in as they realize what it takes to provide for a family, and suddenly they feel trapped in a nightmare.

Storyboarding

The video is meant to feel like a fever dream — someone reminiscing about their first nightlife experience, and how small decisions can change everything. The visuals come to life through psychedelic illustrations and mixed media collage influenced by Afrofuturism and discothèques like Studio 54 and Atlanta's own Charles Disco. Combining these two styles creates a blurred reality as the storyteller tries to recall past memories intertwined with fantasy. But despite the visual vibrancy, the story Big Boi and André tell hits on heavy issues so we wanted to make sure those feelings came through as well.

The
SpottieOttie Angel

This project was definitely one for the books. We were tasked with developing an animation direction that recreated low-fi stop motion movements to pair well with the collaged assets and nostalgic script writing that highlighted each team’s greatest moments throughout history. We used a mix of digital and analog techniques to create the final look.

The Trumpet Instrumental

Despite Outkast’s incredible lyricism and story telling in SpottieOttieDopaliscious, the trumpet instrumentals are one of the most iconic and memorable sections of this song. Because of that we knew these had to be a really visually compelling scenes. They serve as transitional and defining moments in our character’s journey through life, so it was important that we evoked a different feeling each time the instrumental occurred. We decided to create them with these dizzying endless tunnels that slowly grow darker in content and color as the realities of life settle in.
